I watched the first episode of FoxTV's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" last night
and really enjoyed it.
Being an audio production junkie, I downloaded the free episode, courtesy of iTunes and watched it on
the spouse's iMac G5 and wore Sony MDR headphones.
I was really blown away by the production values (this was the pilot, natch) as well as the tightness of the story and its firm placement into the events of The Terminator mythology.
The clip above has several shots in there that were cut from the actual broadcast, and I'm sure that at some point they will compile the 13 completed episodes (hope there's more) and there will be special edition footage, because this was really, really cool.
It's funny, too, that we weren't wanting for Linda Hamilton or Arnold Schwarzenegger, although they were both fine in the prequel to this, Terminator 2.
Terminators, as we know from the 3 theatrical features, can assume any form, and there was no liquid metal stuff here, the prosthetics looked great, even a working cybernetic leg, and the action was all well choreographed.
As you all know, I dig the hell out of female protagonists, and Lena Headey is rock-solid (are there any good American actresses left, come on!) The girl from Firefly that plays Cameron (an homage to the creator) is
also smokin' hot, and her ballet experience leads way to insane martial arts stunts. The little, wry humor is great as well.
I can only think that Fox held back on this series because they new of an impending writer's strike, or that they wanted it to premiere against American Idol, so they could get the largest cross section of viewership.
Anyway, it's technically and artistically superior to NBC's Bionic Woman (Sorry, Michelle Ryan!) and I look forward to the 13 episode arc, which presumably will end with Sarah Connor's death and lead to the inevitable events of T3.
It's certainly worth a look if you're sick of Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Anne or *Uggh!* American Gladiators.
